About Public Safety

Our Mission is to provide a safe environment that is conducive to learning and free of the threat of violence and unwelcome confrontation and maintain the security of Andrews University property so as to enhance the university's overall mission and objectives. The Department of Public Safety is a service department on the Andrews University campus that serves the needs of the campus community as well as guests on campus.


The major functions of the department include:

  1. Enforcement of the National Fire Protection Association Life Safety Code.
  2. Protection of persons and property.
  3. Coordination and/or providing emergency, medical, police, fire and security to all personnel on the campus.
  4. Patrol and protection of the campus facilities including gatehouse operations and locking of buildings.
  5. Control of traffic using speed control devices, departmental personnel, contract law enforcement personnel, vehicle registration, and parking enforcement.
  6. Planning and coordination of crowd control for large assemblies.
  7. Investigation and reporting of criminal activities including collection of data for the Department of Education annual report:
    • The department is solely responsible for handling misdemeanors.
    • Felonies are referred to law enforcement agencies while the Department of Public Safety remains in the "info loop."
  8. Enforcement of the AU drug/firearm-free work and school place.
  9. 24-hour Telephone, Dispatch and Emergency Services.
  10. Educational programs for the campus community.
