What is financial aid?

Financial aid helps you bridge the gap between school costs and what you and your family can
reasonably contribute out-of-pocket. There are two types of financial aid; financial aid that is
free and financial aid that will have to be repaid at some point.  The free kind comes in the form
of grants and scholarships. The other kind comes in the form of loans; lenders can be federal or
private.

HOW TO FILE FOR FINANCIAL AID

The following information is for U.S. and permanent residents only. International students are not eligible for federal or state aid. Click here for International student funding options.

EVERY YEAR

Step 1: Complete the FAFSA & link IRS Data Retrieval/get IRS Tax Return Transcript.

The FAFSA -Free Application for Federal Student Aid is your key to federal and state student aid. Even if you don't expect to take out a federal loan, we recommend you complete the FAFSA. It will allow you to be considered for other types of assistance. Applications are made online. Students and parents of dependant students will need to get an FSA-ID. It generally takes several days for the Federal Student Aid Programs office to prepare its report, and we will need that before we can evaluate your aid request.

The FAFSA will ask you to supply school codes for every university to which you are applying.

The Andrews University code is 002238.

Step 2: Submit the Andrews University Financial Information Sheet.

Once your FAFSA has been filed and your financial aid documents are in, the Student Financial Services team will prepare your award package and an award notification will be sent to your AU email address.  Pay special attention to any items that may require further action on your part. These may include submitting a Thank You note for a named scholarship, submitting proof of residency, or Selective Service registration. These requirements are viewable 24-7 in your finVue account. Outstanding requirements are marked with a red  while satisfied requirements are marked with a green . As packaging progesses, some files may be selected for Verification. Verification is a process used to verify certain information on the FAFSA. Selection can be random or because of errors.

Step 3: Accept or decline offered federal loans.

If you have been offered federal loans you will need to accept or decline them before your award can be considered complete. First-time borrowers will also need to complete Entrance Counseling and electronically sign a Master Promissory Note. These last two requirements are one-time only. Perkins Loan recipients must complete a separate Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note also.
