  • BA ENGLISH, LITERATURE EMPHASIS (36 CREDITS)

    The BA in English with a Literature emphasis introduces students to the range of human experience across genders, cultures, geographies, times, and nations. Students are introduced to critical literary theory and learn to apply their knowledge to the reading and analysis of literary texts. The English major with a literature emphasis prepares students for graduate and professional study and for a variety of professional careers.

  • BA ENGLISH, EMPHASIS IN WRITING (36 CREDITS)

    The BA in English with a Writing Emphasis prepares students for professional careers as writers or teachers of writing.  Students develop writing skills in creative, expository, academic, and professional genres and learn to adapt their writing for a variety of audiences and rhetorical contexts. Students selecting this emphasis are encouraged to select a second major or minor that will enhance future employment opportunities.

  • MA IN ENGLISH

    Students studying for the MA in English take a balanced array of courses in literature and literary theory, composition and rhetoric, and language.

  • MA IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (TESL)

    The TESL degree is designed for students who plan to teach English to speakers of other languages or do further work in linguistics.

  • MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING ENGLISH

    This degree prepare students for certification and teaching English in elementary or secondary schools.  Prerequisite: At least 10 semester credits (15 quarter credits) in English courses, exclusive of the General Education composition requirement.  In consultation with the department chair, certain of the courses listed below may be applied toward such a program. 

    An alternative Master of Arts in Teaching program is designed for those preparing to teach English to speakers of other languages; it requires a minimum of 15 English semester credits including:

  • All students intending to obtain certification to teach English in the state of Michigan must complete the Michigan State Teaching Credential in English.ADMISSION AND DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

    1. Applicants must meet the English proficiency standards (a minimum score of 550 on the paper TOEFL exam [213 on the TOEFL computer version or 90 on the TOEFL Internet version] or 80 on the MELAB exam).

    2.  Applicants must have earned a minimum of 20 semester hours (30 quarter credits) in English courses as prerequisites, including ENGL460 (or its equivalent).  These prerequisites are in addition to the General Education composition requirement.  It is desirable to have completed an English undergraduate major of at least 30 semester hours (45 quarter credits).  Students taking the MA: English (TESL) must have completed ENGL300 (or its equivalent) as a prerequisite.  Applicants with fewer English prerequisite credits than the minimum number required must remove the deficiencies by taking additional English courses other than those required for the MA degree.

    3.  Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language by having done one of the following:  Earned credit through the intermediate college level with a minimum average grade of C; passed an exam approved by the English Department; or completed their education through secondary school in a first language other than English.

    4.  Students must complete a minimum of 33 English graduate credits.

    5.  Canditates must pass written comprehensive examinations.

    6.  Candidates must complete one of the following options: a project paper (30-50+ pages); two project papers (each a minimum of 20 pages); or an MA thesis (75-100+ pages).
