About the Department

The study of history and political science deepens students’ understanding of society, strengthens communication skills, and develops critical thinking. As part of a liberal arts education, these disciplines broaden intellectual experience and build confidence that carries into every area of life.

The History and Political Science Department serves Andrews University students by offering required general education courses as well as degree programs in American history, European history, political science, and social studies. Our faculty help students connect past and present, showing how local, national, and international political processes shape and are shaped by events. All courses are taught from an explicit, biblically grounded Christian perspective.

Our graduates pursue careers in teaching, law, hospital administration, emergency management, community and international development, NGO administration, public policy, and social work.

Alumni have gone on to graduate and law programs at the University of Chicago, Pepperdine University, American University, Northeastern University, the University of Michigan, Catholic University, and Andrews University. They serve as ambassadors, hospital administrators, members of Congress, political assistants and secretaries to the Ambassador of Cyprus in Brazil, staff to the Governor of Hawaii and the Governor General of Jamaica, policy advisors, Peace Corps volunteers, nonprofit professionals, educators, and legal counsels..
