The Junior Lifeguard course will teach water safety and introduce participants to the duties and responsibilities of a lifeguard; however, this course will not certify anyone to be a lifeguard. It will build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills in preparation for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course.

Please note: This class can be taken more than once in order for the students to be prepared to move through the entry level criteria for Lifeguarding. Not being ready and approved for Lifeguarding after taking Jr. Lifeguarding does not mean the student has failed the class, it simply means they need to continue working through the levels of Junior Lifeguarding. Less experienced swimmers may need to repeat levels multiple times, and more advanced swimmers may complete more than one level per semester. As the class covers 4 years of age, most students will need to repeat the class multiple times. There are 4 levels to Junior Lifeguarding.

 

Required Swimming Ability: 

• Swim the front crawl stroke for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
• Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs.
• Show a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using elementary backstroke or back crawl.
• Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater.

Classes begin August 31st and end December 7th.

No Classes for the following dates
● Monday, September 4th (Labor Day)
● Mon & Tues, October 9-10 (University Fall Break)
● Wednesday - Sunday, November 22 - 26 (University Thanksgiving Break)

• Online Registration is Required
• Payment must be made by the first class.
• Payment by credit card is available via the online registration process, or you can bring cash or a check made payable to Andrews University.
• To retain continuity for the lessons, walk-ins will not be allowed.
• No refunds will be issued for missed days.
• Makeups can only be prearranged with the coordinator.

 

Registration will open on July 30th at 8am and close on August 20th at 11pm.
