    PhD Counseling Psychology

The PhD program in Counseling Psychology at Andrews University uses a scholar-practitioner model. It emphasizes the well-rounded growth of students in physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects. Training covers basic therapy skills, traditional and modern psychotherapy, and research experience. Students learn to blend theory with practice, preparing them to work with diverse individuals. The program encourages continuous learning and focuses on both regular development and specific physical, emotional, and mental challenges. It offers a supportive environment for lifelong growth in the field.

PROGRAM LENGTH

  1. Program Length: 5 to 7 years total.
  2. Doctoral Coursework: 3+ years.
  3. Dissertation: 1-2 years.
  4. Fieldwork Internship: 2000 hours required.
  5. Full-Time Only: No part-time options.
  6. Completion Deadline: Must finish within 7 years.
  7. Transferable Graduate Coursework: May reduce time.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Interview days: November to May
  2. Starting Semester: Fall semester
  3. Application Completion: Applicants must have their files complete and be invited to participate in one of the scheduled interview days to be considered for admission into the next cohort.
  4. Late Applications: Applicants are considered for the following academic year.
  5. Eligibility Requirements: Master's degree in counseling or related field.
    • Without a master's: Undergrad major in psychology or related field, strong academic record, satisfactory GRE scores.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Official transcripts: Submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
  • Recommendations: Three recommendations required from professionals (e.g., advisors, professors, employers), with at least two being academic and excluding relatives.
  • Resume: Provide information about employment, research, or special projects.
  • GRE Score: Minimum Andrews University scores of Verbal-142, Quantitative-142, Analytical-3.0.
    • Applicants coming directly from undergrad must also have completed the GRE Psychology Subject Test.
  • Statement of Purpose: 500-word Statement of Purpose outlining objectives (why study at Andrews University?), goals (personal, professional and academic) and future plans.
  • Research Paper: Submit graded papers, reports, or thesis.
  • GPA Requirement: Minimum 3.3 GPA.

TUITION AND COST

  1. Tuition for full-time students (in and out-of-state): $20,790 (30 credits first year) includes 50% scholarship

  2. University/institution fees or costs: $500 - Graduate Student Fee per Semester.

  3. Additional estimated fees or costs to students (e.g. books, travel, etc.): $2,500 in additional course and lab fees plus estimated textbook costs.
