  •  Individuals with a minimum of 3 years of teaching at Andrews University
  • Assistant Professors
  • Associate Professor
  • Full Professors

 

NOMINATION CRITERIA

The faculty member

  •  Shows commitment to the University’s mission as indicated by effective integration of faith and learning
  •  Engages in the mentoring of other faculty in the scholarship of teaching and learning
  •  Shows commitment to lifelong learning in relationship to area-related pedagogy
  •  Demonstrates creativity and innovation in teaching resulting in effective learning
  •  Stimulates interest of students and encourages them to think imaginatively, critically and independently
  •  Engages issues of diversity in the classroom
  •  Develops relationships with students in nurturing and compassionate ways
  •  Adjusts to needs and interests of students using feedback from assessments

 

ACTIONS TO NOMINATE

Using the nomination criteria, write a narrative of one or more paragraphs describing how the professor demonstrates excellence in teaching based on the criteria listed above. Explain why you think they should be considered for the award, sharing stories about the nominee’s commitment to students, performance in the classroom or influence on your personal educational or professional experience. Narrative and supporting documentation should be sent to ctl@andrews.edu. The nominations will be reviewed and considered by the Augsburger Teaching Award Committee.

Augsburger Teaching Award Committee composition: 
  • Three members from the Effective Teaching and Learning Council 
  • Two past teaching award recipients 
  • One member of administration

DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FOR CONSIDERATION (SUBMITTED BY THE NOMINEE) 

  • CV 
  • Teaching evaluations, including student comments, for the last calendar school year 
  • Evidence of creativity and innovation in the development of new and/or existing courses
  • Syllabi for classes taught within last year 
  • Evidence of how the faculty provides feedback to students
  • Evidence of assessment, course learning outcomes and assessment of how the outcomes were met or not met 
  • Evidence of engagement in professional development in the area of teaching including but not limited to peer observations (formative dialogues) and providing support to colleagues

OTHER OPTIONAL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION

  • In addition to the required documents the following may be used:
  • Documents and/or anecdotal evidence indicating how excellence was achieved within the areas of   nomination
  • Pertinent course materials such as syllabi, assessments, and project descriptions
  • Recommendations/comments from the Dean, Department Chair, colleagues, staff and students
  • Other evidence as decided by the faculty member
  • Teaching philosophy statement (one page or less)

TIMELINE

The following guidelines will be used to direct the selection process.

Nomination All nominations must be received by the CTL by October 22.

      » First announcement will be made at the first General Faculty meeting of the semester and via email to general                  faculty, staff, and students at the same time.

    » A second announcement, will be made October 1.

    » A third announcement will be made October 15.

Qualification Once nominated, the candidates will be reviewed by the committee to verify essential qualifications to be included in the pool of candidates.

 Notification Qualified candidates will be informed they were nominated and a list of required (and optional) supporting documentation will be requested. Due date for supporting documentation will be October 31.

Deliberation The Augsburger Teaching Award Committee will review the supporting documentation of the candidates who have met the requirements.

Congratulations Announcement of the award recipient will be made at the Andrews University Awards Ceremony.

 

PRESENTATION OF AWARD

President or Provost presents award

  • Medallion (approved to be worn as part of the official Andrews University regalia)

While new awardees will be given the medallion, it is recommended that past recipients are eligible to receive the medallion purchased by their department or school.

PERMANENT RECOGNITION

Name listed on master plaque housed in the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence or administration offices. Make plaque retroactive from when teaching awards were first given at Andrews. (List by category and year: Zapara Award for Excellence in Teaching recipients / Award for Excellence in Teaching recipients / Daniel A. Augsburger Excellence in Teaching recipients)
