Andrews University has implemented a new recording policy. Although you can view the entire documenthere, it may be easier if you get a short summary of all you need to know!

The policy begins by defining what exactly is meant by the term recording. They state that the definition of a recording includes, but is not limited to: “an audio recording, video recording, taking still or live photographs, and any other form of capturing or streaming audio, visual, or any other forms of media through the use of electronic devices.” They also explain that the reason they are initiating this policy is to ensure the free and trusting exchange of ideas while respecting each other.

The policy then gets into the specifics. For instance, you are to refer to your specific class syllabus and guidelines concerning whether or not you are allowed to record the class lectures. If there are no specific guidelines in that class, you are to ask the instructor for permission to record prior to recording ANYTHING during class lectures. Also, any recording you take must be in accordance with the Andrews policy and current copyright laws. And even if your syllabus allows you to record certain parts of your class, you need explicit permission (written or spoken) from your instructor. If the instructor gives you permission to record the class lecture, or if they are recording the lecture, the instructor must let all attendees know that the lecture is being recorded. If the instructor catches you making a recording without permission, they have the right to make you stop and permanently delete the recording.

Recordings that are permitted and used as supplementary class material are to be used for academic use only. This permission can also be requested by students with disabilities who may request accommodations concerning the class material and structure! But they are not to be used for any purpose other than academics and personal study without explicit permission from the instructor. Recordings should NEVER be used to denigrate, decontextualize, or misrepresent the instructor/speaker concerning what they said in the recording. Also, information from the recordings cannot be separately published, posted, or quoted without the written consent of the instructor/speaker, who, of course, must be properly cited. Any violation of any aspect of the recording policy will be considered a violation of the university’sAcademic Integrity Policy and may result in disciplinary action according to that policy.

In summary, always ask for permission before recording anything during lectures and make sure that permission is explicit. Never use the recordings in an inappropriate manner; use them only for school purposes and study. Be courteous, and remember that this policy is in place to ensure that every student and instructor feels free to speak their mind without fear of their words being taken out of context and used against them later. Remember that you want to treat others in the same manner as you would like to be treated. Adhere to that, know the rules, and follow them. Then you should be good!
