University changes you, sometimes in big, obvious ways, and sometimes in subtle ways you only notice when you pause and look back. As graduation season approaches, many students take the time to reflect on what they’ve accomplished during their time here. For seniors like Derek Wonenberg, these last months are a chance to ponder the moments that shaped who they’ve become during their time at Andrews University.
Derek’s story starts a little differently from most students’. He first began his Andrews experience in the fall of 2023 as a transfer student from Montana State University. Even though he was drawn to the school because of its many opportunities for community and students with similar priorities, he felt directionless in his studies. “[I] was confused and blind in so many ways,” Derek reflected. “...but now I have an understanding of purpose and goal that inspires me to move into the unknown with joy!”
He was, and is still, very involved with the Andrews Ministerial Association and the Andrews University Myanmar Student Association, and pushed hard to make it through school and be involved in ministry. While serving as president of AMA, Derek learned how to help others reach their goals and how to find direction in ministry. The most impactful program he was a part of is the Barnabas internship program. “The internships have helped me to embrace my role as a pastor and hone skills that will help me in my career,” he said.
Derek has faced many difficulties during his time here and had to step away for a semester to learn and grow. “...through that I learned to be satisfied in all things and count the blessings.” This semester off allowed him time to spend with his family and focus on his mindset. “...I had the opportunity to take care of my grandparents and spend time with my grandma while she was still of sound-ish mind. Praise God for His leading!” This prepared him to reenter the college space and to grow in faith.
While reflecting on his favorite memories, Derek pointed out several impromptu activities that made the highlight reel of his years at Andrews. “Random trips to the beach or stargazing events, forcing us to wander aimlessly around the trails behind the main campus, have all created my most memorable and craziest compilations for my time here!” When asked to give advice to underclassmen on how to get the most out of their university experience, he emphasized the importance of finding your people and trying new things. “Find your group and experience life with them! Those people will be with you after you graduate!” He says to go out and explore, change up your day-to-day experience. “There is nothing more fulfilling than growing with those you care about. Adventure together!”
After graduating in May, Derek is excited to start his new adventure and begin working as a pastor. “I’m planning to pastor in Montana in August! By working with surrounding churches and through the Barnabas program, I am prepared. Praise God!”
As graduation draws near, the memories of the past few years take on a new kind of meaning. For Derek, looking back is less about an ending and more about recognizing how deeply these years have shaped his journey. As he moves onward to greater things, these years here will have a lasting impact on his life forever.
