Heather Thompson Day

Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, 2018

I decided to pursue a Ph.D. in Higher Ed because I knew I wanted to serve students through education, and better understand the Higher Education process. I truly believe that education is what transformed my life. I am extremely passionate about providing quality education to my students that will be transformative in their lives as well. Studying Higher Education helped me develop a deep understanding of all the areas of the higher education experience so that I know how the system I work in operates, as well as how I can help think strategically to improve it.

I think many of the courses were extremely helpful to my development. Understanding student development sticks out as being one that really helped me better understand the population I work with, as well as courses that challenged how I would provide stronger delivery of class content based on how the brain learns. I also enjoyed anytime courses asked us to think strategically about the future of higher education and what contributions we could make to keeping our university thriving. This program also taught me how to conduct and analyze research, truly every academic need.

I serve as an Associate Professor of Communication at Andrews University, have a monthly column with two different magazines, and have published 6 books. I absolutely would not have the expertise needed to transform my students and readers had I not done this program.

I am far more marketable due to this program. The research skills I gained were incredibly beneficial to not just my professional development but even my personal development. These skills have enhanced my book publications, strengthened my teaching, and invigorated my sermons. I use research all the time now and even got a job in data-driven storytelling with the largest evangelical research institution, The Barna Group. The bible verse that is behind my success is, “Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.” Psalm 71:18
