You’ll feel right at home studying secondary education at Andrews. Besides our family-like atmosphere, superb professors and Bible-based curriculum, our program is considered “Exemplary” by the Michigan Department of Education.

You can pursue secondary certification with either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS). The School of Education offers emphases in both Integrated Science and Social Studies.

Our Teacher Preparation Program has three phases: Pre-teacher Preparation, Teacher Preparation and Student Teaching. This way, you’re sure to get classroom knowledge AND hands-on experience.

As a  secondary education student you’ll spend a minimum of 15 weeks as a student teacher. You’ll have the chance to observe, participate in classroom activities and, of course, teach!

For certification purposes, you must select a subject major and minor. Our advisors will be there every step of the way as you determine which ones meet your specific career interests.

Careers in Secondary Education

You will prepare for Teacher Certification at the secondary school level (grades 6–12) as you study with us. Usually, secondary teachers teach one subject multiple times in a school day. The great thing about a background in education, however, is that you're not limited to teaching. You can pursue other jobs, too, like counselor, researcher, librarian and more!

You get both classroom and field work as you earn your secondary certification with us. You'll take general education courses and professional courses like Fit for Life and Educational Psychology, as well as the classes required for your specific major and minor. Of course, you will also practice your new skills while working as a student teacher.
