Ann Divine conducts her Fischoff finale

Sometime in 1995 or early 1996, Ann Divine received a call from a student at Oberlin College.

He “literally begged” her to allow his six-piece mixed ensemble — including percussion — to apply for that year’s Fischoff National Chamber Music Association Competition.

He eventually “wore me down,” Divine says, after he promised to bring an entourage to move the ensemble’s equipment on and off the stage.

Good call on her part.
