Food Science

Interested in learning what sort of science goes on in the kitchen? The Department of Public Health, Nutrition and Wellness is offering Food Science as an elective course, available to all students. You will learn what’s actually in your food, cooking skills to prepare it, and the science behind the cooking method.

Food Science offers students a hands-on experience preparing foods in the kitchen with the unique twist of experimentation following the scientific method. Students will get to prepare all kinds of items from ice cream to gluten steaks, testing different preparation methods to learn firsthand what happens if you throw off the acid/base balance of your greens or go ahead and ignore those mixing directions on your muffins. How often can you eat your experiments?

Join us this fall for FDNT 124 Tuesday and Thursday from 1–1:50 p.m. for class time and Tuesday from 2–4:50 p.m. for an interactive lab to learn about what makes up your food and how to combine those ingredients for the best (or most interesting) results!
