Nationwide Emergency Alert TEST

Campus Safety | Posted on September 20, 2018

On October 3, 2018, at approximately 2:20 p.m. EDT the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), along with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will be conducting a nationwide test of their emergency alert systems, including the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) which can send text messages to properly enabled cell phones.

For cell phones that are enabled (as determined by the owner) to receive these alerts, they will receive a text message with the header of "Presidential Alert" and the following verbiage:

"THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed."

The Berrien County Emergency Management Office has also asked the community to participate in a survey to help assess the test. For more information on the survey, please see Berrien County's webpage.

For more information on the national alert system test, please see FEMA's webpage.

Please note that this test was originally scheduled to occur on September 20, 2018, but due to Hurricane Florence, it was postponed to the October date listed above.
