Charles Poll of Lincoln Township sent me a photo of a great blue heron near his home on January 3.

Many people have asked over the years about the rarity of seeing a great blue heron locally during winter. The species is considered a year-round resident over the southern half of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.

In the north half of the Lower Peninsula, the great blue heron is very hard to find between December and March.
