Andrews University acknowledges that it has signed and returned to the Department of Education the Certification and Agreement for the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) and has received funding and intends to use at least 50 percent of those funds to provide emergency financial aid grants to students, as mandated by the Act. Andrews University has approximately 1,273 Title IV eligible students for the 2019–2020 school year.

The 50 percent portion designated for these grants totals $618,278.

As of July 21, 2020, $618,278 has been distributed to 400 students (enrolled in seated classes on the main campus when the University moved to remote learning on March 23, 2020), who had filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2019–2020 academic year and were Title IV eligible students.

Andrews University used an application process where students requested funds based on their needs due to COVID-19 disruption. Eligible students were notified of approval of their application, and their approved funds were sent by eRefunds or by physical check to the address on their application. Some students who have yet to file their FAFSA may be eligible for funds upon filing. Potentially eligible students who have not filed a FAFSA were notified of the opportunity to receive assistance. The application process was closed on June 13, 2020, at midnight. The remaining amount was evenly distributed in the amount of $565 to the applicants that had applied. If you have additional questions, please email covid19@andrews.edu.

To help determine a maximum criteria, Andrews University used a different set of guidelines, looking at the Income Protection Allowance, HHS Poverty Guidelines and an average cost of Institutional Housing at Andrews for guidance. A chart was developed based on the number in household for food and housing with a maximum between $400–$1,200 and for other categories with a maximum from $100–$600. To complete the distribution once this method was met, we evenly distributed the remaining amount of the grant among the 400 applicants that were eligible in the amount of $565.

Questions about the CARES Act funds can be directed to the Office of Student Financial Services through email to sfs@andrews.edu.

Andrews University sent notification letters and an application link about the CARES Act funds on April 14, 2020, and May 5, 2020.
