KINARA CONNECT

By Naeligwa Manongi

From: Tanzania
Level: Graduate

Degree: Master’s in Community & Int'l Development
Project Born: 2023

Course project for: CIDS575 Topic: Development & Humanitarian Innovation

Inspiration: Kinara Connect was born from Nae’s own experience navigating life as an international student. From Tanzania to China to the U.S., she realized that while universities handle immigration paperwork, they often leave students unsupported when it comes to cultural adjustment, daily life logistics, and mental well-being. She wanted to create a platform that bridges that gap.

Product: Kinara Connect is a culturally intelligent, tech-enabled onboarding and support system for international students. It includes an in-person orientation, a personalized 90-day “Compass Plan,” and a digital hub for community, resources, and mentorship.

Target audience: International students transitioning into U.S. higher education institutions, especially those arriving for the first time, unfamiliar with systems like healthcare, banking, housing, and academic norms.

Take Action: Naeligwa is actively seeking university partners, peer mentors, and advisors who want to improve international student outcomes and create more inclusive onboarding experiences. Connect now!

CLINIC YELLOW PAGES

By Veronica Lam

From: Hong Kong
Level: Undergraduate

Degree: Major in Nursing   |   Minor in Mission
Project Born: 2025

Course project for: SOCI431 Needs Assessment & Capacity Mapping (graduate course: CIDS 679 Project Cycle Management), an elective for her minor in Mission.

Inspiration: When Veronica developed a serious leg infection four months after an accident, she struggled to find a trauma surgeon in the area. She also witnessed firsthand, while volunteering at the under-resourced HERBIE Health Clinic in Niles, MI, the challenges patients had with accessing the medical care they needed. Realizing the difficulty in locating medical resources in times of need—and unaware of any centralized support systems—she was inspired to create the Clinic Yellow Pages, a resource to help others facing similar medical challenges.

Product: A resource for healthcare clinics in the St. Joseph area of Berrien County, MI. Created for individuals with limited or no internet access. It includes addresses, phone numbers, and fax numbers for a wide range of specialties—from Allergy to Rheumatology.

Target audience: Berrien County elderly, but available to anyone in the county who finds using the internet challenging.

Take Action: Now you might be thinking, “This isn’t for me.” That’s fine! But I’m sure you know someone who could use it—like your grandma, your neighbor, or that one uncle who still uses a flip phone proudly. Remember: sharing is caring!
