Open Study Carrels Policy

Length of Occupancy/Renewal

All carrels must be renewed every semester. The deadline for renewal is the third day of the new semester. A friendly reminder will be sent by email two weeks before the end of the semester. Failure to renew the carrel could result in the loss of the carrel. Doctoral students could renew their reservation up to five years if there are no students on the wait list. Masters students could renew for up to two years.

Application Procedure

Check “Open Carrels” in the catalog to determine what is available. Go to the service desk at the Multimedia Center and check out your carrel.

  • The carrel is to be kept clean and tidy at all times.
  • Food and beverages should not be left in the carrels
  • Nothing may be stored on the floor.
  • No fixtures to the carrel or to adjacent walls or windows are permitted.
  • Reference materials must not be kept at the carrel.
  • Library materials kept at the carrels must be checked out to the carrel assignee.
  • Carrels will be inspected regularly by library staff to ensure adherence to the regulations. Items not duly checked out will be removed and a warning letter will be sent to the carrel holder.  After two warning letters, the patron forfeits their privilege to reserve a study carrel.
  • Those who are allocated the high end adjustable carrels should not make any adjustments without involving the staff in charge of carrels.
