Community Art Class Catalog

The AU Community Art program is just getting started with our first-ever Summer Season, taught by Andrews University professors and alumni. Stay tuned here or sign up for email notifications to receive updates on newly posted courses. Our Registration page lists courses that are currently available. 

Introductory courses are offered in every season, with Intermediate course offerings on the schedule as we gear up.

All class participants will need to provide a copy of their Health Insurance card and sign our Risk Waiver on the first day of class. Masks are not required.

Intro to Wheel Throwing

Introductory wheel throwing class for adults

Class Cost: $200 (includes tools). Clay is a separate purchase (must be in-house clay); please see our Registration page to register for the class and purchase clay.  

Class Description: Carve some time out of your schedule to get your hands in some clay! During this short course on wheel throwing, you will learn how to center clay, form simple utilitarian production-type ware, trim, apply attachments like handles and spouts, and end with basic glazing techniques.

Class Length: Depending on season, class length will vary. 

Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall.

Intermediate Wheel Throwing

Class Cost:  $200 (includes everything but clay)

Clay: Community class participants must use clay we sell in house. Please see our Registration page for Clay Sales.  

Class Description: A continuation of our Intro to Wheel Throwing class for adults, this course continues with practice on the wheel, emphasizing height, continuity, and functional ware combining different forms and slab or extruded pieces. 

Class Length: 4-7 weeks

Our world-class Ceramics Studio on the campus of Andrews University

features multiple wheel-throwing stations, an area dedicated to hand-building

and sculpture, House Glazes, and several firing options,

including an outdoor wood kiln.

Intro to Watercolor

 

  • Ages 17 and up
  • Class Length: 4 weeks
  • Days and Times: Thursdays, 6 PM to 8:30 PM
  • Next Session will be: TBD
  • Cost: $150 (includes supplies)

A four-week short course that starts with the fundamentals of watercolor and introduction to materials and techniques, and an initial paint-along showing a tried-and-true three-stage watercolor process. The following weeks will then focus on one each of the three stages per week, culminating with the students having completed a painting of their own make and design.
