Hey, everyone! I know it has been freezing lately, with a lot of snow and wind on campus. However, that should not stop you from enjoying music and events, especially with a venue like the Howard Performing Arts Center on campus!

If you are like me, someone who likes to plan things way in advance, or if you just wonder what will happen this semester at HPAC, I got you. Look at this list, and mark the events you do not want to miss on your calendar!

Jan 21, 4:00 PM - Licorice Stick Brigade: Do you feel like chilling for a bit with music that you are mostly familiar with, such as Broadway musicals, some soundtrack songs, and more popular music? This is your chance to do it if you are open to hearing a clarinet quartet live! Two of the members are Andrews music faculty members, so the quality will definitely be high. The entrance is free!

Jan 28, 7:00 PM - Canadian Brass: If you are more of a brass sound or simply feel more comfortable attending a concert at night, this could be your bet. Canadian Brass is coming as a guest by HPAC to perform works in various genres, from Renaissance to jazz, not forgetting march music. Tickets are on sale, but if you are an AU student, you can buy up to 2 tickets for $18 each (plus the service fee, which is less if you buy it physically at HPAC).

Feb 4, 7:00 PM - Steve Green: Yes! One of the legends in Christian music is coming to HPAC in February! With songs like “Symphony of God,” “People Need the Lord,” “In Christ Alone,” and many more, Steve Green has more than 35 years of music ministry. Do not miss it, and get your tickets ASAP! ($18 for students).

March 31, 4:00 PM - Carla Trynchuk & Elena Braslavsky: There is a chance that you heard about The Juilliard School, either in a movie, from a friend, or in the news. Have you once imagined yourself watching someone live from that school, considering the level of artistry their students have? Well, especially if you like classical music, you can hear two Juilliard alums! Trynchuk on the violin and Braslavsky on the piano will perform works by Bach, Schumann, and Szymanowski. You can attend for free, so make sure to go!

April 7, 7:00 PM - Wintley Phipps: Nothing compares to hearing good gospel music on stage. You can experience that by attending Phipps’ concert! He’s not just a baritone singer but also a pastor, motivational speaker, and education activist. Some of his songs include “No Need to Fear,” “I Choose You Again,” “Keep on Climbing,”and more. Tickets are already on sale, so make sure to get yours!

Those are some of the most important events happening this semester! But also, if you prefer to see some familiar faces on stage, save the following dates for the AU ensemble performances!

AU Wind Symphony: Jan 27 at 8:00 PM, March 1 at 07:30 PM, and April 13 at 8:30 PM.

AU Symphony Orchestra: Feb 3 at 8:00 PM, March 9 at 8:00 PM, and April 20 at 8:30 PM.

AU University Choirs: Feb 10 at 8:00 PM and March 29 at 8:00 PM.

Finally, make sure to follow the AU Department of Music and HPAC Facebook and Instagram pages to learn about more upcoming events, such as Tyler Ninalga’s Senior Piano Music Recital (January 19, at 3 PM) or the AU Composers recital (March 10 at 4:00 PM), and so many more.

Use these events as self-care experiences or co-curricular credit opportunities (yes, there are some; just look at the entrance and see if there is a list for co-curricular credit). Whatever the reason, you should attend one of these events, and I assure you that it will not be a waste of time. Enjoy!
