The Andrews University Department of Visual Art, Communication and Design (VACD) lets students explore their creative sides in a closely connected environment. With an innovative curriculum that blends traditional art forms with new technology, the VACD prepares students for a wide variety of career paths in fields like public relations, digital media, marketing, and visual design.

The department provides students with the tools to refine their artistic talents while equipping them with essential practical skills. Nigel Emilaire, a VACD senior, says one of his favorite things about the department is that he and fellow students can “experience a little bit of everything!” Similarly, Andrew Francis, a VACD junior, appreciates the department’s vast offerings. "I love the diverse topics that are available in the VACD classes, from event planning to social media to photography and other art forms," he says.

In response to rapidly evolving digital media and communication technologies, the VACD seeks to foster future professionals who can adapt and innovate. Celeste Velinova, a VACD junior, thinks flexibility is an important part of the program. “The world is changing, especially with AI,” she says. “Most professions that are at risk are scared of AI, but this program adapts to the change and embraces it.” The department’s emphasis on merging artistic expression with technology prepares its graduates to be successful in a range of industries.

Because of its wide-ranging approach, the VACD is accessible to students of all academic backgrounds. Department Chair Daniel Weber emphasizes the value of creative skills in fields outside the arts. “We have a lot of students that actually take our classes outside the majors,” he says, “which is good because you may have a STEM or science student pre-med, and they realize that taking creativity-based classes is actually good for them.” This blend of creativity and practicality ensures that students from all walks of life can benefit from what the VACD offers.

Professional development is another key component of the VACD. Students are given numerous opportunities to connect with industry professionals, attend networking events, and gain real-world experience. One highlight this year is the department-sponsored trip to the Society of Adventist Communicators convention, where VACD upperclassmen will have the opportunity to meet with communication and media experts.

Beyond academics, the department fosters a vibrant sense of community. Through activities such as game nights, field trips, and hands-on creative workshops, students and faculty build relationships that extend beyond the classroom. One standout event is the department’s annual “burn,” where students gather around a massive fire kiln to create ceramics. “It's the wood fire kiln that's outside, and we have to feed that thing for 24 to 48 hours, wood, by hand. So we have these parties,” says Professor David Sherwin, “And people come, and they roast their hot dogs and they can get clay. Anybody that's not even in ceramics class, like me, can go down there, and if there's a wheel free, you can start throwing clay.” This tradition not only provides a fun artistic experience but also cultivates collaboration and a sense of community, allowing students to bond with peers while practicing their artistic skills.

This academic year marks a significant milestone as Sherwin concludes his nearly 30-year teaching career at Andrews University. A beloved VACD professor, Sherwin reflects on his time fondly. “I've enjoyed my 29 years,” he says. “I'm going to retire while they still like me. Hopefully!” His departure marks the end of an era, but his impact on the department and its students will continue to resonate for years to come.

As Weber reflects on the future of VACD, he expresses excitement about the department’s growth. “I'm excited to be part of this faculty. And I know all of our faculty are 100% invested in making sure that our students are really successful in fully developing their talents,” he says. With a dedicated team of educators and a curriculum designed to inspire, the VACD department will continue to thrive as a space for creativity, innovation, and personal growth.

In a world where creativity and technology overlap more than ever, the VACD offers an environment for students to explore their potential. Whether through the connections they build, the hands-on experiences they gain, or the artistic talents they hone, students graduate from the department ready to leave their mark on the world.
