Giving Up on a Star

Oh, how beautiful the sky is! When night comes, stars get together to dance around the moon, and the landscape no longer fears darkness, for the stars provide hope for the creatures living around the earth.

A little kid was walking around the pastures in the evening. The kid would always wear a green, soft shirt and blue, brilliant pants. The kid was amazed at the beauty of the stars’ ball dance. So many different colors, each one shining on its own. Some were big enough, even people from a far land would see, and other stars were small but added a special touch for that night. It was so hard for the little kid to choose which star was its favorite. Until the kid saw this beautiful star: a sparkly, gracious yellow star that would move around so fast, it could run around the whole sky in a small amount of time.

The kid then remembered that each child in town was invited to a great banquet at the mayor’s mansion. However, it was required that each child should bring one star from the sky, and it had to be combined with their pre-set outfit. The kid was anxious about it, but once they found that yellow star, the kid knew it was the right one.

Now the big challenge was to be able to chase and get the star. The kid did not have anything to build or find a way to catch the star. The kid looked around and started to take some branches from trees, some rocks, and a couple of ropes. With great effort, creativity, and perseverance, the little kid tried once, and again, and again to find a solution. They tried to build stairs, ladders, and traps, but nothing was successful. In its last attempt, the kid was able to build a small plane, enough for the kid to fit in. The only problem was that it flew at a slow pace. There was still time, though, and so the kid started flying the plane.

As the kid started to rise to the sky, they would also see other stars, some of which were not as difficult as the yellow sparkly star to reach. Sometimes, the little kid would try to reach those stars, but then those stars would show their true colors, which did not match the kid’s outfits, thus making the little kid go back to reach the yellow star.

The sky was not easy to navigate, especially with so many stars moving from one place to another. The little kid’s airplane would sometimes go through turbulence; some of those turbulent moments would be so strong that the little kid thought the plane would get destroyed. Yet, little by little, the kid was getting so close to the star that they already started to imagine what the other kids would say about that star. The little kid could not wait any longer, so the kid tried to rush the plane as much as they could.

Something strange started to happen every time the kid got closer to the star. Sometimes, the star would spark so strongly that it would radiate electric shots that hurt the kid’s skin a little bit, as well as the plane. Other times, the star would suddenly fly in a different direction, and thus it left the little kid behind, as they tried to redirect the plane. Yet other times, the star would also deceive the little kid by hiding behind other stars. It was a never-ending game for both the star and the kid.

Until finally, just a couple of hours before the great banquet, the little kid finally reached the star. Grabbing the star from one of its ends, the little kid said to the star: “Please, let me take you to the banquet! Your color matches my outfit, and if we work together, we could both be the stars of the banquet! Please!”

The yellow, sparkly star looked at the little kid with a gentle smile and said, “I am so sorry, but I cannot go with you. Another kid should go with me instead.”

The little kid, confused, answered, “But my outfit’s colors match your color. Besides, I worked so hard to finally reach you. You made it very hard to finally catch you. I even got some scars on my skin. Why did you not say anything before?”

The yellow, sparkly star said nothing and simply left.

The little kid looked around, and then to their body. Evidently, the scars were still tender in their skin, and the plane was quite damaged too. The little kid felt hopeless and defeated, and just sat on its plane to silently cry. What would the little kid do without a star?

After some crying, the little kid came back to its senses. The little kid really wanted to go to the banquet, so they had to find a star as soon as possible. Near the little kid was a purple star. This purple star was a bit smaller and quite not as sparkly as the yellow one. Yet the purple star was always shining, and always pointing towards the same direction. The little kid decided to approach the purple star and asked, “Are you okay, purple star? You do not seem to spark as much as the other stars.”

The purple star replied, “I might not spark or call the attention of everyone, but I know several travelers rely on me, so I focus instead on constantly shining for them.”

The little kid, noticing the noble character of the star, invited the star to the banquet. The star accepted, and so the star jumped to the little kid’s green, soft shirt. It still complemented the outfit, so the little kid felt more at ease and went to the banquet.

Inside the little kid’s heart, there was grief and sadness for not having brought the star they wanted, but the kid still appreciated the purple star, and thus continued to participate in the banquet along with the purple star. At the banquet, the other kids asked about the scars on the kid’s skin and of its puffy eyes. The little kid told them, “It does not matter. I, at last, got a star, a beautiful star.”

Giving up on their dear star did not stop the little kid from finding means to continue going to the banquet, after all.
