After seven years of leadership, mentorship and service at Andrews University, Dean Amy Rosenthal is saying goodbye to the Andrews campus and transitioning into a new role at Newbold College of Higher Education in Bracknell, England. She will be greatly missed across the campus community.
Rosenthal completed both her master's and doctoral degrees in British History at Indiana University. After finishing her education, she became a faculty member at Pacific Union College for nine years before moving to Southwestern Adventist University to become the vice president for Academic Administration in 2012.
In the fall of 2019, Rosenthal was hired as the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Andrews. Within that position, Rosenthal has been responsible for overseeing a wide range of departments and academic programs and guiding the college’s work within the arts and sciences.
Later in 2021, Rosenthal was asked to take on the Undergraduate Dean of Education position. “Within this job, I have worked with other colleges on initiatives and have done a lot of policy work,” Rosenthal shared. “I have also been the chair of the Policy Subcommittee, which consists of both a graduate and undergraduate committee.”
One of the things that Rosenthal will miss the most about Andrews is all the fantastic faculty and staff. “I’ve told them they’re always going to be my people,” she said. “I have valued their wisdom and guidance. They’ve been so very gracious and caring over the years.”
Rosenthal has also enjoyed being able to be involved in more international education over the past few years. “I’ve been able to visit programs in Kenya and Vietnam, and those kinds of things have been really great in terms of my professional growth,” Rosenthal shared.
When a new job opportunity at Newbold College arose, Rosenthal was eager to take it on. “Newbold holds a very special place in my heart,” Rosenthal said. Although she didn’t attend the college as a student, she did spend a summer there during her college years and has very fond memories. “It’s always been a place that makes me feel at peace.”
Rosenthal is a historian by training and did a lot of her research in the UK. As a Victorianist in 19th-century Britain studies, she is excited to work on more research and writing within that specific area. Rosenthal hasn’t had a sabbatical since working on her dissertation, so she is also interested in having some time to step back and work on a bit of her own areas of interest.
Within her new position at Newbold, Rosenthal will be working on program development. “They have several new programs that they want to build and get ready to launch, and I love doing that kind of work,” Rosenthal shared.
Rosenthal is most excited to be near the city of London. “It’s my favorite city that I’ve been to,” she said. “It’s also a place I feel very comfortable with.” Rosenthal has traveled to the UK frequently for research trips, and she is happy to return and enjoy her time there at a bit of a slower pace.
Rosenthal will begin working at Newbold on July 1.
