Did you know the most complete mammoth skeleton ever found in Michigan is right here at Andrews University? Discovered just two miles from campus in 1962 and excavated by students, this incredible specimen is the highlight of our Department of Biology Museum—but it’s time for an upgrade!

This year, we are focused on saving our mammoth from "extinction". Unfortunately, the years have not been kind to our mammoth and several of the ribs and other bones are in dire need of repair. We have already identified an expert that can aid us in the needed repairs. This same person is already restoring our mastodon tusk with the funds you graciously provided last year. This mammoth repair will help us to preserve our unique specimen for many years to come.

An update on the use of funds from last year. The long awaited tusk repairs begin in July. We have also designed a new display stand for the tusk once it has been restored. In addition, our students have been diligently working on the displays featuring the ice age skulls, and the interactive display of mammoth and mastodon teeth. Last year we 3D scanned and printed the teeth so that visitors can hold them and see and feel the differences between the two types of prehistoric elephants. These teeth are printed using a plant-based filament, a process also carried out by AU students. This summer, a painting depicting life in Michigan when mammoths and mastodons roamed here is also in the works.
