Unfortunately the Jordan Field School Tour has been cancelled for 2024 due to unrest in the region. We will update with any new opportunities as we have them.

Jordan Field school, centered in Madaba, Jordan, provides students with a variety of opportunities to complete coursework in various areas. Students will be able to explore archaeology, ethnography, anthropology, heritage management, and various other topics related to culture, anthropology, and archaeology

When: June 6 to July 5, 2024
Israel Tour Extension (Add'l Cost): July 5-12, 2024

Deadline to sign up: January 24, 2024
(later sign ups may be possible if there’s space available and if the student will not be doing archaeological site work).

Costs: Students can expect to pay 9 credits of regular tuition plus a $600 (approximate). This covers your course instruction as well as transportation, lodging, most meals, and weekend excursions as listed on the itinerary.

Courses: As a multidisciplinary experience, students will choose 9 credits from the options listed below in consultation with their advisor(s). Students with specific course needs are encouraged to contact Dr. Hatfield or Ms. Bradfield at the emails listed below to discuss options.

  • ANTH455 Ethnography - 3 credits
  • ANTH478 Archaeological & Ethnographical Perspectives on the Middle East - 3 credits
  • ANTH496 Fieldwork in Anthropology or Archaeology - 1-8 credits
  • ANTH440 Top: Archaeology & the Bible - 3 credits
  • ANTH440 Top: Conservation & Heritage Management - 1-3 credits
  • other courses may be arranged with the tour director

Weekend Excursions:

  • Mount Nebo
  • Zarqa (Jabbok) River, Jerash (Gerasa), Gadera
  • Petra
  • Dead Sea, Jordan River, Baptism Site, Bethany beyond Jordan, Amman City Beach

Optional addition: Students may be able to add an optional one week tour of Israel from June 5-12, 2024. This extension will incur an additional cost which we expect to be approximately $1600 to $2000 per person depending on the number of people. This extension will visit:

  • Sites near Jerusalem: Jericho, Bethany, Ein Gedi, Masada, Qumran, Mt. Olives, Temple Mound, Bethesda Pools, Bethlehem, Herodium, Samaria/Sebasta, Shechem, Jacob's Well, Mt Gerizim
  • Sites in Jerusalem: Garden Tomb, Via de la Rosa, Church of Holy Sepulcher, Burnt House Musem, Hezekiah's Tunnel
  • Sites near the Sea of Galilee: Megiddo, Nazareth, Capernaum, Mt. of Beatitudes, Peter's Primacy, Tabgha, Boat Museum, Boat tour of Sea of Galilee
