In a time when social awareness is vital more than ever, student-led organizations are stepping up to spark conversations and action. The Social Justice Club is one of those groups, bringing together its members to advocate for justice, educate students around campus, and support communities in need.
The club started in 2019 and currently has around 100 members, according to club president Audrey Lim (junior, sociology). Its mission is to foster awareness and active advocacy on campus and within the broader social discourse.
Lim joined the club her freshman year as an intern. “It seemed like the kind of thing I wanted to be involved in on campus and the type of impact I’d want to make.” She is currently the club’s president.
Something unique about the Social Justice Club is that the club officers are all women. Lim explained, “All of our officers applied and were voted in—and we did have men as applicants—so this is a reflection of our cabinet elections. I think it’s great that all of our officers are women of color!”
This past year, the club has put on many events and activities. At the beginning of the fall semester, the club passed out double-sided red cards with information to help students understand and assert their rights when encountering both law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
This semester, the club spread awareness about ICE by passing out sodas with excerpts of people affected by ICE actions. They also did a Social Justice Cafe and donated their profits to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund for Gaza Relief.
Most recently, the club collaborated with the Biophilia Club. The event was a flower bouquet activity where students got to create their own bouquets for $6. The proceeds went to an environmental justice fund called EarthJustice.
Lisabeth Tuffour (senior, computer science), a member of the club, encourages students to get involved in the Social Justice Club. “I think people should join the club because we focus on raising awareness about social issues and highlighting the injustice present in our world.”
Lim hints at the coming school year by saying, “Next year we’ll be tabling in the Campus Center and at the Club Fair! Feel free to reach out if you are interested in becoming an officer or intern!”
