"Honors Students Lead in Service" written by Stephanie Smart

The Honors program at Andrews University provides students with an environment to grow in academia, but also goes beyond that and provides an opportunity to serve. Program director L. Monique Pittman, English professor, says, "The Honors Program has long had a tradition of cultivating service to others as well as academic excellence." Each year, the honors program provides the Andrews community the chance to participate in service-oriented activities. Part of these activities involves planning a service project to benefit efforts of the Seventh-day Adventist church in the area as well as other non-profit organizations that seek to serve the needs in the local community. Pittman explains the reason behind this tradition: "The Honors Program wishes to demonstrate to the community that Andrews supports not only its own church out-reach but also those efforts by other organizations to address the suffering of others"

Honors' first project for this school year took place during the months of November and December. They collected toys for the children who participate in the Benton Harbor children's ministries, sponsored by the Andrews Outreach programs.

More recently, during the month of February, the honors officers organized a drive to benefit the Center for the Homeless in South Bend, Ind. This center serves the area by providing hot meals, job training, personal development training, transitional housing and help in home ownership. In its history of about twenty years, the center has served thousands of people in the community. The drive was held to collect items the center neeed, such as cannded food items, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and office supplies.

Andrews students, faculty, and staff donated items that were then delivered to the center. In adddition to the items collected, the on-campus organization ACTION donated five large bags of clothing that they had previously collected through their own project.
