Culture

Shaping a community of rest, trust, and restoration.

A Theological Foundation for Culture

At Andrews University, culture is not defined by trends or traditions—it is rooted in the character of God and the example of Christ. The Office of Mission and Culture seeks to foster a campus culture that reflects the values of God’s Kingdom, where individuals are valued, rest is honored, and justice is pursued.

One of the key biblical models that shapes our cultural vision is the concept of Shabbat—a lifestyle of rest, renewal, and relationship. This rhythm of life invites us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with God and one another. God would have us embrace an expansive understanding of Shabbat.

“We are called to live a culture of restoration—a culture where rest is sacred, trust is cultivated, and love is practiced.”
– based on reflections by Dr. Willie Hucks

Building a Restorative Culture

Our goal is to create a restorative culture—one that nurtures the well-being of every member of the Andrews community. Our seven core values are:

  • Compassion: Genuinely caring for our students, our community, and one another.
  • Trust: Creating a safe environment where honesty, transparency, and grace define our interactions.
  • Integrity: Being true to ourselves and to the mission of our University, looking honestly at how we might improve all that we do.
  • Humility: Focusing on others, lifting them up through a humble and committed attitude.
  • Wellbeing: Nurturing our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health in a holistic manner.
  • Justice: Engaging in practices that repair harm, promote equity, and affirm the dignity of every person.
  • Innovation: Crafting fresh solutions and effectively tackling stagnant situations.

These values are more than aspirations—they are guideposts for how we study, work, serve, and live together.

Campus Culture in Action

The cultural vision we pursue is expressed in everyday decisions and campus-wide initiatives. These include:

  • Promoting restorative practices in conflict resolution and community life
  • Advocating for Creation Care, recognizing that stewardship of the earth is part of Kingdom living
  • Encouraging rhythms of life that honor both personal wellness and communal responsibility

Through intentional programs, collaborative conversations, and institutional practices, we strive to align our culture more closely with the heart of God.
