\n The Fiestas Patrias peruanas\, or Peruvian National Holid ays\, are celebrations of Peru'\;s independence from the Spanish Empire . They officially consist of three days: June 24 is celebrated as Countrym ans day. July 28\, in commemoration of Peru'\;s independence won by Jos é\; de San Martí\;n.

\n Peru\, officially the Republic of Peru\, is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the no rth by Ecuador and Colombia\, in the east by Brazil\, in the southeast by Bolivia\, in the south by Chile\, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean.
\n Peruvian territory was home to ancient cultures spanning from the No rte Chico civilization\, one of the oldest in the world\, to the Inca Empi re\, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conque red the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty with its capital in Lima\, which included most of its South American colonies. Afte r achieving independence in 1821\, Peru has undergone periods of political unrest and fiscal crisis as well as periods of stability and economic ups wing. Economic cycles have mostly been based on the extraction of raw mate rials like guano (1840s-1860s) and rubber (ca. 1900).

\n The Peruv ian population\, estimated at 30.4 \;million\, is multiethnic\, includ ing Amerindians\, Europeans\, Africans and Asians. The main spoken languag e is Spanish\, although a significant number of Peruvians speak Quechua or other native languages. This mixture of cultural traditions has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in fields such as art\, cuisine\, liter ature\, and music.
