How can you tell if something is acidic or basic? How can you track a toxic substance or diseased tissues inside your body? Scientists often use molecules as probes to see (detect, sense) an environment (cell, protein, reaction, etc) that they otherwise could not 'see'. The color changes of pH paper or the green fluorescent protein all allow us to probe the environment at the molecular level. These techniques are at the heart of microscopy and medical diagnostics. It allows us to detect pathogens, diseases and toxic substances.
