PARKing Day in K-Zoo Includes Andrews Volunteers

Kalamazoo residents, merchants, pedestrians and volunteers did their part Friday to make the downtown a little more communal by creating their own mini "parklets" --one parking space at a time.

Friday was National PARK(ing) Day, an annual global event in which citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered "parking spaces" into "PARK(ing)" spaces"-- temporary public places.

Working with volunteers from Andrews University, Kovatch helped create inviting street-side spots in front of Taco Bob's, Sticks and Stones and Down Dog Yoga Center. In future years, spots on side streets may be added if they are appropriate for reclaiming, Gernaat said, but with this year's quick turnaround for participation, there were safety concerns that require more time for review.
