"Most Likely to Succeed" Conversation on Education

On Sunday, May 22, the Andrews University School of Architecture & Interior Design will present a screening of the film “Most Likely to Succeed” at 3:30 p.m. in Buller Hall’s Newbold Auditorium on the Andrews University campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

“Most Likely to Succeed” is a 2015 film about the education system in the United States. IMDB.com says, “The current educational system in the United States was developed a century ago during the rise of the industrial age and was once the envy of the world. However, the world economy has since transformed profoundly but the U.S. education system has not.”

The film presents the problem of students finishing school unprepared for the world they live in, and focuses on the story of a San Diego, California, school that is “completely rethinking what the experience of going to school looks like.” “Most Likely to Succeed” follows students, parents and teachers and asks the audience to consider what type of educational system and experience is most likely to succeed in the 21st century.

“This is a conversation about best practices in education methods,” says Mark Moreno, associate professor of architecture and organizer of the event. “Should we assume that how we educate today will prepare our children for a future we can’t even imagine?”

Following the film, several local professionals will participate in a panel discussion about the state of education in the U.S. Panelists are: Larry Schanker, executive director of Brookview Montessori in Benton Harbor, Michigan; Lynne Clayton, arts educator and Montessori adolescent teacher in Benton Harbor; Hanns Heil, former industrial arts, computer technology and chemistry teacher in Coloma, Michigan; Liz Lundy, education psychologist with Berrien RESA.

Attendees of this event may use their validated admission ticket as a discount coupon for Renaissance Kids Architecture Camp 2016 at a value of 15 percent off the regular price, as space is available. Coupons are transferrable, but only one coupon may be applied to each child’s registration. For more information about Renaissance Kids, visit andrews.edu/go/renaissancekids.
