Community Announcements | Posted on November 14, 2017

The musicians of the Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra will be performing two concerts to complete their fall term. The first concert will be Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 7:00pm at LC Mohr Auditorium at South Haven High School. This concert features the LMYO’s most advanced group, the Youth Symphony, which is a full orchestra with wind, brass, string and percussion students representing 12 schools in southwest Michigan and northern Indiana. Pieces being performed include “Jupiter- the Bringer of Jollity” from The Planets, by Holst and Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring, by Howard Shore and highlight the advanced skill level of the students.

The second concert will be Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 4pm at the Howard Performing Arts Center in Berrien Springs. This concert presents pieces by all three LMYO ensembles: the Concert Strings, the Encore Strings and the Youth Symphony. The three ensembles reflect the advancement to more complex music as students progress on their instruments. Highlights of the concert include "Rosin Eating Zombies from Outer Space" by Meyer and a special guest, professor Phillip Serna of Valparaiso University, performing "Concertino for Viola da Gamba & Small Orchestra" by Rudolph Dolmetsch.

The Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra is one of several educational programs of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra. For over 30 years, the Youth Orchestra has provided an orchestral experience for talented young musicians in southwest Michigan from kindergarten age to college senior.

Under the direction of conductors Burke Lokey, Joe Oprea, and Beth Oeseburg, the Youth Orchestra, Encore Strings and Concert Strings rehearse on Monday evenings during the fall and spring of each school year.

The orchestra performs four public concerts each year - A “Run Out” Concert, a Winter Concert, a Spring Concert and the ‘Side by Side’ Concert with the Southwest Michigan Symphony. The LMYO program includes scholarships to summer music camps, sectional rehearsals with members of the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra and free tickets to SMSO concerts. Membership is by audition for all three groups.
