End the Status Quo

Andrews University has been involved in student missions since the 1960s. General Conference records show that by 1963 Andrews had sent out three student missionaries. To date, over 1,250 Andrews University student missionaries have been sent out to fill calls around the world—30 of these individuals are serving for the current 2017–2018 academic year.

Floyd Counsell, who is serving as maintenance staff in the Philippines, says, "Being a student missionary is hard. Don't think it will be easy or fun all the time. I can guarantee, though, that if you put your faith in God, He will bless you and use you to bring glory to His name. It is a rewarding experience and a time in your life that you will never have again. There are so many things that one can do as a student missionary, including language learning, visiting, making connections with the children, teaching, leading, maintenance and medical work.”

Floyd continues, “A couple months ago I hiked to a different village to visit with some people and also try to learn more of their language. As I was there, these two boys would always be running around playing barefoot. They always took interest in me and had such beautiful smiles. I visit there often and say hi to them in their language when I see them. It is rewarding to be able to visit with people and to smile and laugh with them. God loves these people so much, and He has given me a love for them, too. Mission work is a great sacrifice, but Christ's sacrifice was so much greater. Everything we do now is an investment in the kingdom of Jesus!"

This year, in support of Student Missions, Campus Ministries has coordinated “Shop Berrien Week.” From January 22–26, a portion of purchases at participating local businesses will be donated to student missions, helping Andrews continue to send student missionaries around the world.

Andrews University accommodates student volunteers who want to serve in short- and long-term mission projects, both locally and internationally. For more information, including application deadlines, visit andrews.edu/cm/change/missions, email sm@andrews.edu or call 269-471-8361.
