Kaleb Cockrum appointed Humboldt County judgeship

The Humboldt County Public Defender’s office has lost yet another experienced attorney to the bench. Gov. Jerry Brown appointed interim Public Defender Kaleb Cockrum as a superior court judge, replacing Marilyn Miles who stepped down in July.

Cockrum leaves the Humboldt County Public Defender’s Office without a leader after he was appointed to temporarily fill the spot following the resignation of David Marcus in November. The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors named Cockrum as the interim public defender in December.

“It’s an amazing feeling that something that took a 14-month process and hoping the entire time it would come to fruition that it happened,” Cockrum told the Times-Standard on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s funny because I got the call at 8 o’clock at night and I wasn’t expecting it but was very excited to get it.”
