Crises Big and Small

A traumatic event requiring a response from a Critical Incident Stress Management team doesn’t have to be big, like a school shooting.

Harvey Burnett Jr., associate professor of psychology at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, said a car accident that kills a couple of students at a school can trigger the need for a CISM team.

Preparing to help people after a traumatic event takes more than putting together a CISM team, he told a group of counselors and advisors Monday at an event sponsored by the Counseling Association of Southwest Michigan at Lake Michigan College’s Mendel Center.
