SMSO Presents "Latin Rhythms"

Community Announcements | Posted on April 11, 2018

Showing the world that the guitar spans a musical spectrum beyond rock, blues and heavy metal, guest artist JIJI joins the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, April 29, 2018, 4:00pm at the Howard Performing Arts Center in Berrien Springs as they present their Latin Rhythms 2017-18 Mainstage Season finale concert. Full of a range of rhythms that catch you off guard or offer soothing sounds, the program will sample various Latin influences on classical music.

Special guest artist JIJI will perform the classical guitar concerto, Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo as a highlight of the concert. Her impeccable musicianship, combined with compelling stage presence and fascinating repertoire, earned her First Prize at the 2016 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. JIJI is an adventurous artist on both acoustic and electric guitar, playing an extensive range of music from traditional and contemporary classical music to free improvisation. Born in Seoul, South Korea, JIJI now resides in New Haven, CT where she is a passionate advocate of both classical and new music. Also a composer, JIJI incorporates electronic media and acoustic music that is influenced by her regular activities as a DJ.

JIJI will present an educational outreach program in the band room at Lake Michigan College on Friday, April 27th at noon.  Students are invited to bring their guitars for an interactive demonstration. Please contact Joelle Regovich at joelle@smso.org for additional details.

The concert will also feature works by Argentinian Alberto Ginastera, Uruguayan-born American composer Miguel del Aguila, and JoaquÍn Turina. The well-known piece, Boléro, by French composer Maurice Ravel, will also be performed. Tickets are available by calling 269-982-4030 or by visiting the SMSO website at www.smso.org
