Marie Yeager Cancer Center to Host Free Film on HPV

(ST. JOSEPH) – Community members are invited to join Lakeland Health and the American Cancer Society for a free screening of the documentary, “Someone You Love: HPV Epidemic.” The event will take place on Tuesday, September 25 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Marie Yeager Cancer Center, located at 3900 Hollywood Road in St. Joseph. 

This award-winning documentary takes a look into the lives of five brave women affected by HPV. Their stories portray the misconceptions, stigma, shame, heart break, pain, and triumph that they experience while battling cervical cancer. The program is best for women and men ages 18 and older.

Internationally Noted Expert to Discuss Health Systems and Health Equity

(ST. JOSEPH, MI) – Professionals in medicine, allied health fields, and social work, as well as government leaders and community members are invited to attend this event, which is part of a three-year speaker series titled Community Grand Rounds: Healing the Trauma of Racism. David Ansell, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President for Community Health Equity at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago will discuss Rush’s strategy to be a catalyst for community health and economic vitality on Chicago’s west side and how that strategy may inform our work in southwest Michigan.

The free program, “How Inequality Kills — Health Systems and Health Equity” will take place on Thursday, September 27 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the Hanson Theatre at Lake Michigan College, located at 1100 Yore Ave. in Benton Harbor, MI.

Over the past decade, Dr. Ansell, author of “The Death Gap,” has been involved in health equity work, bringing attention to higher rates of breast cancer mortality for African-American women in Chicago. In 2007 he co-founded the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Taskforce, a not-for-profit that focuses on eliminating the racial disparities in breast cancer mortality.

Dr. Ansell earned a bachelor’s degree from Franklin and Marshall College in 1974 and, in 1978, his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University. In 1991, he received a master of public health degree from the University of Illinois School of Public Health.
