Nu Sigma Service Project

Campus Announcements | Posted on October 30, 2018

This semester Nu Sigma (the English Honors Society) is doing a book-based service project. This project is the initiative of our Nu Sigma president, Alexi Decker. Her parents recently became missionaries in Hong Kong, and the K-12 school her dad is principal of is in desperate need of books for their library. As a result, we are planning to host a book drive this Christmas. Anyone is welcome to donate their favorite new or like-new children’s book. Regarding reading level, they welcome anything from picture books or read-aloud books to chapter books and appropriate young adult books. Please keep in mind that this school is Adventist, and books should be chosen accordingly. After the book drive, Alexi Decker will pack the books up and fly them out to Hong Kong this Christmas.

Nu Sigma officers are well aware that finding the time, money, and transportation to go book shopping can pose a challenge, particularly since the closest Barnes and Noble is all the way in South Bend! Fortunately, this month, the Crayon Box is taking orders for the Scholastic Book Club. The prices are great! You can purchase four books for as little as fifteen dollars, and these books come for all ages and reading levels. Every book purchased through the Crayon Box gives the teachers there additional classroom resources through Scholastic. This has the added benefit of making our service project assist two separate libraries and twice the amount of kids. Of course, you are welcome to bring a book separately as well.

You can look through book catalogues at the English Department (located at the front desk and upper-room table), in the Honors Office (located at the front desk), or online. To order through the Crayon Box online, please go to www.scholastic.com/readingclub, register as a parent, and use the code HJNLC when prompted to link to a teacher or classroom. If you would prefer not to do this, feel free to email Dr. Corredera (correder@andrews.edu) or Alexi Decker (alexid@andrews.edu) and place your orders with us. If not ordering online, you can pay with cash or a check made out to SCHOLASTIC. Online orders (or cash for online orders) are due by Thursday, November 1. Cash donations will still be accepted through the month of November. Whatever cash we receive before November 8 will be put towards the Scholastic book fair on November 9, and cash donations after that point will be used to purchase books through Amazon. Cash can be dropped off in the piggy banks located at the front desks of both the English Department and the Honors Office.

We are very excited about this project, and we hope each of you are too. Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions.
