The Michiana Adventist Forum presents “The Prophetic Power of Sabbath: It Is Not What You Assume It to Be” with Olive J. Hemmings, PhD, professor of religion and ethics at Washington Adventist University, on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m., Feb. 23, 2019, in Chan Shun Hall on the campus of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI.

About the Speaker

Olive Hemmings has been teaching in Seventh-day Adventist higher education since 1982 and has been teaching at Washington Adventist University for the past fifteen years in the areas of New Testament Bible and Greek; world religions; social, biblical and theological ethics; and dogmatic theology, both in graduate and undergraduate programs. She has served as president of the Adventist Society for Religious Studies. She holds a PhD in theology, ethics and culture from Claremont Graduate University.

She has ordained ministerial credentials from the Columbia Union Conference and pursues a yearly itinerary of preaching and teaching nationally and internationally. She is engaged in an active writing ministry, mainly on topics of current ethical concerns in church and society. Her major publication, "Sacred Texts and Social Conflict," is a case study of the debate over women’s ordination in the Seventh-day Adventist Church to demonstrate the ways in which sacred texts function as the site of power for communities in conflict.

Olive has been married to Charles Kuuku Paintsil of Accra, Ghana, for 30 years, and they have three young adult “children”—William Yofi, Alexandra Ama and Harold Mica-El Kwesi. She says her great passion in life is fueled by a strong sense of purpose and is sustained by the grace of God.

About the Subject

The presentation will focus on the theme that a Sabbath-observing community ought to be on the forefront of practicing and advocating justice.

Adventist Forum is open to the public. All are welcome. For information, contact Art Robertson at robertsa2@earthlink.net or call 269-471-7150.
