Innovative Community Health Initiatives Discussion

Professionals in medicine, allied health fields and social work, as well as government leaders and community members are invited to attend a free speaker event, “Advancing Health? It’s about the Mind, the Body and the Community,” on Wednesday, July 17 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Howard Performing Arts Center at Andrews University, located at 4160 East Campus Circle Drive in Berrien Springs.

The event, hosted as part of a three-year series titled, Community Grand Rounds: Healing the Trauma of Racism, will feature keynote speaker Bechara Choucair, MD, senior vice president and chief community health officer for Kaiser Permanente. Dr. Choucair will discuss how his organization is working to improve conditions for health and equity by building communities that have stable affordable housing, meaningful work that pays a living wage, successful schools, clean air and water, nourishing foods in neighborhood stores, and safe places to exercise and play.

In his role at Kaiser Permanente, one of America’s leading integrated healthcare providers and not-for-profit health plans, Dr. Choucair oversees the organization’s national community health efforts and philanthropic giving activities aimed at improving the health of its 12.2 million members and the 68 million people within the communities it serves.
