Sunday Music Series: Schubert & Perera

Campus News | Posted on October 17, 2019

On Sunday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m., the Andrews University Department of Music will present the “Sunday Music Series: Schubert & Perera” in the Howard Performing Arts Center.

The repertoire consists of two quintets for strings, one composed by Franz Schubert and one by Adriana Perera, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music. Franz Schubert’s piece, the romantic “String Quintet in C Major,” was finished shortly before his death in 1828 and is considered one of the greatest compositions in the chamber music genre. Perera’s quintet, “Nostalgia Porteña,” evokes a nostalgia for Buenos Aires and is written as a tango tribute to one of Argentina’s most celebrated musicians, Astor Piazzolla.

Perera is currently completing her doctoral studies at the Universidad Catolica de Argentina, where she is a DMA candidate in music composition. Before coming to Andrews, she taught and served at Oakwood University and two locations in Spain. She is also an international speaker, composer and recording artist—one of her ultimate goals is to help people organize quality music ministries in local churches.

The aforementioned repertoire will be performed by several Department of Music faculty members: Carla Trynchuk (violin), Claudio Gonzalez (viola), Karin Thompson (cello) and Chris Wild (cello). Guest student, Danya Wilson (violin), will also be performing alongside the faculty members.

Admission for this event is free, and no tickets are required. For additional information, contact the Howard box office at 269-471-3560. For a full season schedule of events at the Howard Performing Arts Center, visit howard.andrews.edu.
