25 Years of Service: Joon Hyuk Kang
Professor of Mathematics, Department of Mathematics
Joon Kang joined the Department of Mathematics in 2000, having specialized in nonlinear partial differential equations, probability theory, and modeling during his doctoral studies at Michigan State University. He was promoted to full professor in 2010.
A member of Sigma Xi, Joon has published 37 peer-reviewed articles, seven of which were written jointly with students that he has mentored. In addition to his research, Joon has served as sponsor for the Andrews chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society.
Through teaching the real analysis sequence and other upper-level and special-topic courses, exposing students to rigorous proof-based mathematics, Joon has prepared a generation of Andrews students for doctoral study in mathematics.
One graduate writes, “For each class that he taught, Dr. Kang made sure I could explain myself carefully and rigorously.” Another graduate adds, “If it weren’t for the care, dedication and rigor in Dr. Kang’s teaching, I am certain I would not have done as well in my graduate studies.” Yet another expresses, “In classes and outside, Dr. Kang treated me like a mathematician, and that gave me the confidence that I can be a decent one.”
Thank you, Joon, for your work in advancing mathematical understanding and investing in our students!
