35 Years of Service: John J. Markovic

   Employee Awards 2026 | Posted on March 2, 2026

John Markovic’s 35 years at Andrews University make him a treasured member of the Department of History & Political Science.

During his time in the department, he has served as chair in addition to his teaching, service and research commitments. As chair, he began a tradition of bimonthly colloquiums to bring students together for instruction, entertainment and fellowship. The department is open to students from across campus, and John’s vision of sharing knowledge and providing fellowship grew to participation in Student Life’s short courses and University-wide “Tuesday Choice” options.

John cares about our students and their current and future success as historians, political scientists and citizens of the world. As the department continues to redefine the college experience, John’s knowledge has been invaluable in shaping a revised curriculum for the twenty-first century.

An overview of John’s career would not be complete without a mention of his research. While he has been known for his scholarship, his current work places him on the cutting edge of new directions in the intersection of faith and history. His department colleagues appreciate John for his humor, frankness, Christian values and cooperative approach to teamwork and department programming.

Thank you, John, for 35 years of service to Andrews University.
