Born in Washington, D.C., Dr. Alayne Thorpe grew up between the hills of Kentucky and Maryland, shaping the resilience and perspective that would guide her life’s work. She went on to the University of Maryland, earning her PhD in modern British literature, and was awarded a fellowship to study at the University of Cambridge, where she focused on Anglo-Irish poetry.
Her first classroom was a public high school in Maryland, where students became the center of her efforts. From there, her career expanded widely, including Washington Adventist University, the University of Maryland, George Washington University and many Seventh-day Adventist institutions worldwide.
A major chapter of her career unfolded as she helped pioneer distance education at Griggs University and Griggs International Academy. Following its merger with Andrews University, she served as dean across multiple areas—the School of Distance Education, Graduate Studies, the College of Education & International Services—shaping programs and people alike.
Her legacy is one of innovation, leadership, mentorship, curiosity, wisdom, humor, sweet treats and a deep commitment to education that transcends borders.
