Information about Social Security Number

We are very excited that you will be working at Andrews University! Being employed comes with many responsibilities, one of which is obtaining a United States Social Security Number.

We do not require you to have a Social Security number before you start work. However, the Internal Revenue Service requires Andrews University to report wages using a Social Security number. Therefore, you will need to obtain that number. These are the steps you will need to take in order to obtain the Social Security number.

  1. Find employment on campus. If you have questions about where you can work, please read your visa stipulations or ask the Employment Office.
  2. Register full-time for classes in a given semester. Full-time status is 12 undergraduate credits, 8 graduate credits, or 9 MDIV credits per semester.
  3. Turn in New Student Employee Packet to the Employment Office.
  4. Once your employment has been approved by the Employment Office, you are to request the necessary items from the Employment Office to obtain a Social Security number. These items must be obtained within two weeks of your employment beginning date.
    1. Letter of Employment
    2. Letter of Verification of Enrollment
    3. Application for Social Security Card
You can obtain the two letters by filling out the Social Security Letters Request Form and bringing it to the Employment Office. The request form and the Application for Social Security Card are both available online.
  5. Take your letter of employment, letter of verification of enrollment, and the Social Security Card Application to the Social Security Administration Office.

We will continue to charge this fee until your Social Security Card is shown to our office. Also, at the end of each calendar year (December 31), a fine of $50 will be assessed to your Andrews University student account. To avoid these fees, please plan accordingly.
