High School Career Expo

Andrews University hosts an annual Career Expo for local public high school students as part of Change Day.  Each year, approximately 400 high school students participate in the event which is designed to expose students to the many career options available to them. Each department of Andrews University showcases career options that are possible through their fields of study.  University students, faculty and staff find engaging ways to help students understand the major roles, responsibilities and requirements associated with each line of work.

In 2019, the Career Expo was be extended to 11th - 12th grade students from Berrien Springs, Benton Harbor and Bridgeman. The program provided opportunities for high schoolers to meet university students and professors who are passionate about their course of study. Thirty-two university departments operated booths where they provided engaging presentations, answered pertinent questions and shared fun giveaways.  The university also invited professionals from the major community industries technical educational and vocational fields to participate.  High school students must be accompanied by adult chaperons.

Community partners like Whirlpool, Lakeland Health, Berrien RESA, and Michigan Works, provide chances for students to learn of the job possibilities in our local community.  The high school students are afforded the opportunity to learn the roles, responsibilities, requirements, and remuneration of the various areas of work.  Through this program high school students could be inspired and encouraged to work harder towards achieving their true potential.

Student feedback has been positive.  The expo creates opportunities to explore new ideas and concepts relating to careers and vocational success on a university campus, the first time for many.  The program allows high school students to meet university students, who are seeking after excellence. The students are welcomed by the staff of the Andrews Enrollment Dept. and given university tours by the Andrews Ambassadors.

To maximize the benefit of the Career Fair, students are encouraged to take a skills/interest inventory and bring a printed copy of the completed assessment to the event. This information would help with students in the Career Exploration session that follows the session in the gym.

The program is free for participants.  Schools are required to register in advance.  For more information please contact carlisle@andrews.edu.
