Care for Cuba Benefit Concert

On Wednesday, March 14, at 7 p.m., the “Care for Cuba: Benefit Concert and Dedication,” featuring world-renowned violinist Jaime Jorge, will take place at the Howard Performing Arts Center on the campus of Andrews University. The evening will also include a special dedication for the Care for Cuba mission team leaving March 16 to spearhead evangelistic efforts in Cuba.

For over two decades, through 15 albums and more than 2,500 concerts in North and South America, Europe, Australia and Asia, Jaime Jorge’s music has touched the lives of millions. Born in Cuba in 1970, Jaime began violin studies at age 5. When he was 10, Jaime’s family immigrated to the United States, and he began lessons with eminent violinist Cyrus Forough, a student of the great David Oistrakh. Jaime’s mom wanted him to be a violinist, but he dreamed of becoming a missionary doctor. He pursued his dream, but in his second-year of medical school Jaime felt the Lord’s call to leave medical school for a life of service dedicated to music ministry. Ever since, Jaime has been using his talents to share the love of God through sacred and classical concerts and special appearances all around the world.

The concert will serve as a dedication and benefit concert for the Care for Cuba mission team. In 1998, a team from the Berrien Springs Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church, comprised mostly of Andrews University students, made history as the first Adventist missionaries from North America to minister in Cuba in nearly 40 years. A few years later the Care for Cuba program became a year-round ministry culminating in an annual study tour that allows seminary students to do personal and public evangelism in Cuba as well as provide needed resources to local Adventist churches.

In 2017, the team distributed 100 bicycles, 20 computers and 12 tablets to pastors and Bible workers. In addition, they brought clothing and musical instruments to supplement the meager supplies of the Cuban people.

“We bring the inspiration, the tools and the materials,” says Fernando Ortiz, director of the Seminary’s Master of Divinity (MDiv) program and founder of the Care for Cuba project. “It’s an avalanche of help to empower people who are passionate for God and solid Adventists who need a boost to be equipped to do more effective ministry.”

This concert provides a chance to help the ministry. A free-will offering will be collected to support the Care for Cuba ministry which provides tools and resources for pastors and Bible workers in Cuba. Admission to the concert is free, and no tickets are required.
