Intercultural Studies—DIS

The Doctor of Intercultural Studies program equips practitioners, leaders, and trainers who minister in cross-cultural mission contexts through focused study and research in theological and social-science fields of study. The program aims to enhance the level of academic mission studies in the Seventh day Adventist Church and to facilitate more creative and effective mission practice.

PROGRAM LENGTH

This 48 credits program can typically be completed by students in 5 years.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

The Doctor of Intercultural Studies program only admits students once each year for cohorts offered during the summer semester.

It is recommended that the online application be submitted at least 9 months before the start date for Module 1 of the cohort being applied for. Classes for Module 1 normally are taught during the summer semester (May to August).

Prospective students must submit their applications by August 31.

POINTS OF DISTINCTION

  • Accredited by the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and by the Adventist Accrediting Association.
  • Combines academic rigor with practical field research.
  • Cohort based with low teacher-student ratio.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • A master’s degree (or non-U.S equivalent) in Divinity or a related discipline from an accredited institution and a minimum graduate GPA of 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Three Recommendations: two general and one from a church leader from a cross-cultural mission setting.
  • Resume describing employment, research or special projects.
  • Statement of Purpose reflecting your philosophical perspective, personal, professional, academic goals, and reasons of seeking the graduate program.
  • Research paper giving evidence of the applicant’s ability to carry out research and to present results in a standard and acceptable style.
  • TOEFL, IELTS or PTE (academic): Students whose language of education is not English must submit English proficiency tests scores.
  • Seminary Background Screening.
