Work-around for Mac Network Printing

For macOS users needing to print, please use one or more of the following methods to print your documents:
Most Windows computers

Save to USB Drive

  1. On your Apple computer, use Disk Utility to format the USB drive in MS-DOS (FAT) format.  See Apple's Disk Utility User Guide for more information on how to do this.
  2. Documents saved on the USB drive must be in a common file format such as PDF or in a Microsoft Office compatible format (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, etc).  Documents saved in Pages, Numbers or Keynote formats are not compatible on Windows computers.
  3. Sign-in to a Windows computer with your Andrews username and password
  4. Insert the USB drive into an available USB port
  5. Navigate to the USB drive, open and print to the desired printer

Save to Cloud Storage Such as Andrews OneDrive or Andrews Google Drive

  1. On your Apple computer, sign-in with your Andrews email address and password to either your onedrive.com or drive.google.com.
  2. Save a copy of your document(s) to be printed by uploading them to cloud storage of choice.
Documents must be saved in a common file format such as PDF or in a Microsoft Office compatible format (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, etc). Documents saved in Pages, Numbers or Keynote formats are not compatible on Windows computers.

Email Notification from University Communication, Sept 20, 2021

Last week Microsoft released several printing updates to address a variety of printing vulnerabilities and other non-security issues. For information on the issue(s) addressed by the Microsoft printing updates view this link.

These printing updates have caused an issue with printing for both Windows and Apple (macOS) computers in a networked environment. This issue is not isolated to Andrews University or to a local client computer configuration.

Windows users should make sure they have the latest updates installed by allowing the automated Windows updates to be applied to their computer. When the latest Windows updates have been applied (and the computer restarted), normal printing should resume utilizing the Windows print servers. Without the latest Windows updates, printing will not function.

For Apple (macOS) users, printing utilizing a Windows print server is not functioning. At this time, neither Microsoft nor Apple has released a fix or work-around to resolve this "no print" issue.

For macOS users needing to print, it is suggested to save a copy of the document to a USB drive, network storage location, or in an email and then use a shared Windows-based computer and print utilizing that Windows computer. You will need to ensure that the document is in a common file format such as PDF or in a Microsoft Office compatible format (.docx, .xlsx, etc.).

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause in the short-term until a resolution is identified. If you have any questions please contact the ITS Contact Center at 269-471-6016 or by email at helpdesk@andrews.edu.
